What does ML/M/MH mean on a lure rod?

If you look closely at most lure rods, you will notice marks such as ML, M and MH printed on the blank. Many beginner anglers feel confused about these labels and fail to select a rod matching their fishing style. ML, M and MH stand for rod power rating, which indicates how much force is needed to bend the fishing rod and reflects the rod’s load capacity, applicable lure weight and target fish size. It is one of the most important parameters when choosing lure equipment.

ML stands for Medium-Light power. Rods marked ML are relatively soft and sensitive. They are designed for lightweight lures and excel at transmitting subtle underwater vibrations. Anglers can easily detect tiny bites from small and medium-sized fish. Thanks to the gentle bending curve, ML rods offer excellent buffer effect while fighting fish, effectively preventing line breakage. However, their lifting strength is limited. ML rods are perfect for targeting perch, small bass and other miniature species in lakes and streams, and they are widely favored by anglers who enjoy delicate fishing tactics.

M means Medium power, commonly known as all-round power. Medium power rods strike a great balance between sensitivity and strength. They adapt to a wide range of lure weights, covering most popular soft plastics and medium-sized hard lures. When encountering medium-sized predatory fish, M power rods deliver enough hook-setting force while maintaining good shock absorption. Suitable for ponds, rivers and reservoirs, M lure rods can handle bass, snakehead and common freshwater fish. Owing to outstanding versatility, M power rods are always the top recommendation for novice anglers who do not want multiple specialized rods.

MH refers to Medium-Heavy power. MH rods are stiff and powerful. They are made for heavier lures and capable of casting over longer distances. The rigid blank generates strong hook penetration and powerful lifting capacity, which is essential when fishing around thick weeds, branches and other obstacles to pull fish away from shelters. MH rods are the ideal option for chasing large, fierce fish. On the downside, the stiff structure sacrifices partial sensitivity, making small bites harder to identify. As a result, MH power rods are more suitable for experienced anglers with clear target species.

It is vital to note that power standards vary slightly among different manufacturers. Besides power, anglers also need to consider rod action, length and reel matching. Our factory supplies lure rods in ML, M and MH power in various lengths for both spinning and casting models. We support OEM customization to satisfy diverse fishing demands from global customers.
